On The Lake – In The Blizzard
Minneapolis, MN – February 3, 2016 – As 25-30mph winds blew ice and snow sideways across Lake Calhoun, the blizzard obscured everything in sight, except for the docks which were left floating before it froze over. Had it not been for this total white-out, you’d see trees, roads, houses, a small restaurant, and Lake Calhoun’s trademark view of the Minneapolis skyline. To my surprise, I wasn’t the only one on the Lake in this weather. There were also two windsurfers and one other stranger just walking across, but as the light quickly left, so did they, and soon I was alone.
Having seen this potential shot on my way home from work, I rushed out of house with my photo gear about as soon as I came in the door; a decision which lead to my trudging across a frozen lake in a blizzard with no mask or snowpants. When I couldn’t feel my legs or face anymore, I decided it was probably time to head back. This shot was definitely worth the struggle. Photo by Louis Fine.
