Protesting Washington Football at TCF Bank Stadium

A protest I covered as a multimedia photostory when I was in college. The American Indian Movement assembled a massive protest that marched down University Avenue near the University of Minnesota in protest of the Washington Redskins. The main message of their protest was to educate people on the origin of the term Redskin. While most people believe it refers to skin color, AIM set out to tell people that it was actually a reference to blood running down the skin of Native Americans after they had been scalped. For that reason, they found the name of the team highly offensive and demanded it be changed.
